"Why can some people sing effortlessly while others struggle?"
This is the question that began my adventure into reverse engineering natural talent.
Hi, I'm Phil Moufarrege
I have a deep passion for unravelling the mysteries of life - particularly reverse engineering natural gifts and awakening higher potential.
Originally from Australia, I have been living in Japan and helping singers unlock their voice since 2013.
I wasn't born with any natural talent for singing...I didn't even know it was something you could "train". I was kind of tone deaf and had to build my voice completely from scratch.
Even after many singing lessons and studying vocal technique for years, I still had an extremely limited vocal range, singing felt very effortful, and I was filled with anxiety not knowing what my voice would do on any given day.
All the songs I wanted to sing, including my own originals were just completely outside of my vocal range and I felt like my voice was trapped in a tiny box.
I decided to follow my intuitive senses and explore my own ideas. And after years of trial and error, I eventually transformed my voice, increasing my vocal range by an octave, and can now sing my favorite music in the original keys...stuff I never thought I would be able to sing.
I began helping others with their singing, and have been honing my ability communicate the "mysterious and ethereal thing" we call singing in a very clear and tangible way - a clear path to unlocking true vocal freedom, so that you can finally express yourself fully and freely as an artist.
The Singing Method
After years of reverse engineering the best naturally gifted singers, I came up with creative ways to answer the question:
"If I can't do what they are doing, then what is the closest sound I can make right now to build up to it?"
- If I can't sing effortlessly then what is the closest step down from that which I am able to do right now that will help me build up to it?
- And if I cannot do that step, what would be the next step down from that which I could do?
- And if I cannot do that, then what would be something easier I can handle at my current level right now?
- And if I cannot do that step, what would be the next step down from that which I could do?
Stepping stones or "progressions" from the very bottom all the way to the top that can be scaled directly to each person's unique voice and level of development.
This process is what I used to build not only my own voice from scratch but also unlock countless other people's voices. Many of those people were very hard-case individuals who had difficult vocal challenges to overcome.
I had to hone my ability to hear very well with my ear what muscles are out of balance or weak in someone's voice, and to be able to know immediately what sounds they need to make to activate the right muscles so the voice can become stronger and better coordinated.
It's learned by hearing and repeating. Most people are confused by the "final product" of great singing. It's hard to understand "where does that sound come from". But you can immediately understand and grasp a "less refined, beginner version" of that sound if I show it to you. Then you copy it, and we build it up and the muscles get stronger and you gain the ability to make new sounds that you can then use to advance further.
My extensive experience in martial arts, biomechanics and sports performance helped me form my process.
The Difference
I kept discovering more and more "stepping stones" and then testing them on different people to see if they were universally relevant to everyone or just specific to that one singer's unique voice.
After I would see something work consistently in a predictable way, I would then conclude "Ah this is a universal principle" and officially add it into my process that everyone could follow.
This is very different to how singing is usually taught.
Usually you're expected to somehow jump from where you are to the end product without any kind of steps.
And if you can't do the techniques properly you're typically given vague instructions such as "try to relax your voice more" or "sing with more resonance".
The other problem is that the way singing is commonly taught is usually not reverse engineered from the end product down, so what happens is you'll be taught "solutions" that won't actually ever lead you to where you want to go even when you successfully follow those "solutions".
Like how I see people being taught to constantly "smooth the break" from chest voice to falsetto in hopes that it will somehow "transform" into a "full sound". It won't do that because effortless full voice singing that great singers do doesn't actually come from that coordination at all.
This isn't to say there is no benefit in smoothing the break between chest voice and falsetto, it's just to say that you need to understand what you are hoping to expect out of it otherwise you could train it thinking it's going to take you somewhere that it won't.
When we understand what sounds or stepping stones lead to what outcome, we can then train all sorts of things without false expectations, and have clarity on where it is leading us. I train falsetto, but I don't expect it to one day become my chest voice. Make sense?
The Path Of Awakening Oneself
As you gain more and more ability with your voice, we shift from singing in survival, to fully expressing ourselves in a healing and transformative way that brings us closer to ourselves, the music, and to others.
Survival singing is where you are "performing" (trying to be someone else), where you "try to get through the song", where you're "trying to impress", where the mind is leading the dance instead of the heart.
Many people get stuck here.
Our goal is to overcome the muscular, emotional and mental bottlenecks that stand in the way, so we can truly be confident and free to express ourselves without having to think.
So we can get lost in the moment and feel like we cannot make a mistake. So we can play with our voice, break the rules, and awaken innocence in ourselves.
Singing goes beyond just a fun hobby and becomes spiritual communication, healing and transformation.
This is the deeper world that you will discover as your voice gains more and more ability.
